Artist’s Statement

Jen Pawol earned her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute and her MFA in Painting from Hunter College. She has used various forms of painting, drawing and photography to provoke thought surrounding athletic achievement on issues such as morality, ethics, gender inequalities and cultural values prevalent in society. Pawol has built her work upon a rationale that pairs a strict color code system with numbers, dates and player(s) collected from resources which include, but are not limited to: internet box scores, newspaper articles, scorebook records, career statistics, sports cards and live game footage. She has incorporated this foundational theory with numerous underlying geometric structures found within the correlating sport's physical boundaries. Pawol's rigid logic ultimately reveals the spiritual aura and emotional energy embedded within the heart of the athlete.
